Since 1977, the York Early Music Festival has been held annually to commemorate and honor York's many marvelous medieval churches, guild halls, and ancient dwellings. Through extraordinary music-making of unparalleled international caliber, this celebration is regarded as a crown jewel amongst NCEM's yearly events and is attended by guests from around the world.
Join many other festivalgoers for the 2023 York Early Music Festival, running from Friday the 7th to Friday the 14th of July! The event will celebrate the life and work of one of England's most renowned composers, William Byrd. His fascinating life was filled with "smoke and mirrors" as he served a Protestant Queen while still practicing his Catholic faith. Come listen to Roses and The Marian Consorts perform music that transcends state and religion; witness harpsichord extraordinaire Francesco Corti explore Byrd's keyboard masterpieces; and marvel at the celestial sounds produced by the York Minster Choir in combination with The Sixteen. This is an experience you won't want to miss!
This year, York Early Music Festival is delighted to have several esteemed guest artists join their lineup. These include Ensemble Jupiter with the brilliant countertenor Iestyn Davies; The City Musick led by Bill Lyons and their Renaissance' big band', which pays homage to David Munrow's remarkable legacy; as well as the gifted violinist Rachel Podger, who will be accompanied by Italian theorboist Daniele Caminiti on the NCEM stage.
The York Early Music Festival invites you to the celebration, where Europe's most talented up-and-coming ensembles will take the stage. This includes the winners of the 2022 York International Young Artists Competition and four extraordinary female artists: Helen Charlston, Carolyn Sampson, Anna Dennis, and Alys Mererid Roberts! Get ready for an evening that will pique your interest and captivate you.
